A quality granite slab starts with highly selective stone blocks. Blocks are quarried and graded based upon their size, color, veining, and fissures. They are specially handled, cut and resin treated at the best facilities with the best equipment and polished under the highest quality standards.

The blocks that are not as nice are 2nd grade they are sold at discounted prices and go to second rate facilities that are more interested in price than quality. Finally there are commercial grade blocks. The blocks that are not 2nd grade are "commercial" grade blocks. They are typically used for building exteriors where flaws are not as visible when viewed from the ground. They are also used for making tile as flaws can be cut around and some of the material can be salvaged.

Discount counter-top
fabricators frequently use commercial grade slabs. Most consumers can not tell the difference because they do not know what to look for. Unscrupulous fabricators may tell you it is 1st quality material when in fact, it is not.
